Sole DXB, in partnership with Cadillac, Dubai Design District (d3), Dubai Tourism and Sprite is proud to announce this year’s full line-up. From a heavy weight music line up with Hip Hop royalty, and fresh talent from across the globe, to a series of cultural talks, a film screening, radio programme with SHURE presents ON AIR, and a series of brand activations. The Film Screening – Kicking off the Sole DXB weekend on Thursday 6th December, Bobbito García presents Rock Rubber 45s – a cinematic odyssey exploring the connectivity of global basketball, sneaker, and music lifestyle through his lens as an authentic NYC culture orchestrator. The film explores García’s youth dealing with mistreatment, educational quandaries, identity, and loss as well as his ascension to self-determination as an adult freelance creative. The ballplayer/ author/DJ/filmmaker has carved an independent career that has inspired millions throughout the world, and has affected the growth and direction of the footwear, hip hop, and sports industries in the process.
The award-winning Filmmaker, Bobbito García said: “I had long thought about writing an autobiography, but after having directed two documentaries, I realised I could very well tell my story with sound and picture, with the goal of impacting my community on a deeper level than my first two projects … by sharing a vulnerable narrative that includes themes of family, identity, and loss that many can identify with, while also opening up about bullying, abuse, and conflict that can be taboo topics to reveal as a man, particularly of the hip hop generation.”
Sole DXB and Cinema Akil present the film screening, with free admission, suitable for all ages. The screening will be followed by a Q&A with Bobbito García. No tickets are required for Thursday 6th December.
The Music Line Up – Known for his alternative R&B sounds and eclectic style, Dev Hynes, better known as Blood Orange, presented by PUMA, will take to the main stage on Friday. Blood Orange penetrated the music scene in 2009 and has collaborated with talent such as Solange, A$AP Rocky, Mariah Carey and more. His latest album, Negro Swan, has been critically acclaimed and is a self-exploration of hope. He will be joined by critically acclaimed rapper Giggs, presented by adidas Originals, as well as Northampton artist, Slowthai, bringing a mix of grime, rap, and garage, and South Africa’s rising star Sho Madjozi. Within the PUMA space, emerging artist Masego will his debut performance in the UAE.
The Talks – Nas, will lead the speaker line-up, followed by New York battle rapper and pioneer female MC, Roxanne Shante. Reebok Classic will present two speaker sessions; Kerby Jean-Raymond, founder of Pyer Moss and winner of the CFDA/’Vogue’ Fashion Fund, and author journalist Vikki Tobak and hip hop photographer Barron Claiborne, who will be holding a book signing for Contact High; A Visual History of Hip Hop at the Reebok stand.
SHURE presents ON AIR – Check out Sole’s own radio programme on site throughout the day, as SHURE presents ON AIR. Friday’s line up of live radio DJ’s including; The Beat with Big Hass, Stretch + Bobbito, Roxanne Shante + DJ SYLK and more.
The Music – Set to perform for the first time in the UAE, legendary Queensbridge Rapper Nas will headline the main stage on Saturday. He will be joined by America’s R&B duo Lion Babe, one of the industry’s first female rappers, Roxanne Shante, and ABRA, presented by Reebok Classic, one of the most highly anticipated artists of the year, with a unique sound of freestyle house and R&B. Within the PUMA space, emerging artist “Lil Bebe” singer, DaniLeigh, will make her debut performance in the UAE.
The Talks – Global alternative culture platform Highsnobiety will present, “Just Dala- Meet Heads of Cape Town”, a documentary screening, followed by a panel with the director, and photographer, Imraan Christian, alongside guest, Cape Town rapper, YoungstaCPT and Highsnobiety CEO, David Fischer. South African based fashion brand, Unknown Union, will host a session with its President and Co-Founder Jason Storey, alongside the brand’s Creative Director Yasiin Bey (formerly known as Mos Def) and Art Historian, Dr Barbaro Martinez-Ruiz, whose expertise lies in African and Caribbean arts.
SHURE presents ON AIR – Check out Sole’s own radio programme on site throughout the day, as SHURE presents ON AIR. On Saturday, the live radio DJ line-up includes; Stretch + Bobbito, The All City Show with Dan Greenpeace, and Roxanne Shante.
Over Friday and Saturday, there will be an experiential activation from adidas Originals, who will also bedropping Yung Series, Never Made, Yeezy and Dragonball Z. From the luxury brands, there will be a series of exclusives and experiences from Dior and Farfetch – the global technology platform for luxury fashion. PUMA will launch; Selena Gomez X PUMA “Strong Girl” Collection, PUMA CELL, RS-X, CALI, and be dropping their latest sneaker in collaboration with Istanbul-based streetwear brand Les Benjamins. In addition, Reebok Classic will be presenting the latest Reebok by Pyer Moss collection, and an all-new vehicle by Cadillac will be revealed for the first time in the Middle East, at the event.
Supporting the burgeoning creative scene, the young brands that will be showcasing at Sole DXB, include: Leaf Apparel and Unknown Union from South Africa, Almost Gods and Nor Black Nor White from India, and homegrown UAE talents including Precious Trust and Amongst Few.
Moving onto this year’s Early Retirement concept store, Sole DXB has collaborated with 10 brands and creators, including the likes of Hassan Hajjaj, Precious Trust and The Basement, to produce an exclusive run of Sole DXB merchandise, only available at the event.
Other key elements to the event, include; Sole Ball Above All Classic, Sole DXB’s basketball tournament and the Sneaker Swap, where people will have the opportunity to buy, sell and trade footwear from leading collectors in the region.
