Sharjapan: The Poetics of Space to Explore Book Design in Japan

Sharjah Art Foundation (SAF) presents Sharjapan: The Poetics of Space, curated by Yuko Hasegawa, Artistic Director of the Museum of Contemporary Art, Tokyo. Running from 21 November 2018 to 15 January 2019 in Al Hamriyah Studios, Al Hamriyah, Sharjah, this exhibition will highlight book design in Japan from the early 1900s to the present through innovative exhibition methods, bringing together typography, page design and photographs combining text and images.

Sharjapan: The Poetics of Space will be accompanied by three days of public programming on Wednesday, 21 November 2018 and Friday, 23 November 2018 in Al Hamriyah Studios and on Thursday, 22 November 2018 in Poetry House, Al Mureijah Square, Sharjah. The first day will see a solo performance by Japanese poet Gōzō Yoshimasu, while the second will include a collaborative performance by both Yoshimasu and Emirati poet Hassan Al Najjar. The exhibition’s curator, Yuko Hasegawa, will also give a tour of the exhibition on Friday, 23 November.

Culture Convenience Club Co., Ltd. will organise the selection and presentation of the books in the exhibition, and Yoshiaki Irobe from Nippon Design Center will execute the space design. Sharjapan: The Poetics of Space is part of a three-year-long collaboration between Sharjah Art Foundation and Yuko Hasegawa.

This exhibition is free and open to the public.
