This month, CNN Style turns the spotlight on Dubai and explores how the region is becoming an emerging market within the luxury fashion industry. The programme discovers how Dubai, which has long been the tourism centre of the region, is now setting its sights on becoming the region’s fashion capital.
The programme accompanies Vogue Arabia on a photoshoot at Dubai International Airport with international style icon Naomi Campbell. One of the original “supermodels”, Campbell broke boundaries in 1988 when she became the first black model to appear on the cover of French Vogue.
A trailblazer herself, Campbell has seen the fashion industry evolve and is now witness to a new battle for equal representation on the fashion frontline. Campbell tells CNN she believes Dubai will soon become a “fashion capital” and discusses the importance of diversity within the fashion industry.
At the shoot, CNN meets Belgian photographers Domen/Van De Velde, who are based in Paris and Dubai and have shot campaigns for top designer brands. The duo outlines how their approach shifts when they’re in Dubai.
Syrian couture designer Rami Al Ali is the first Dubai-based fashion designer to show at Couture Fashion Week in Paris, breaking into the highest echelons of the fashion world. Al Ali tells CNN how he balances the influence of his rich and colourful heritage with a modern and minimalist aesthetic.
CNN Style Dubai also meets Iraqi artist Wissam Shawkat, who established his name in Dubai and whose work has since entered the luxury space with brands like Tiffany’s, Hublot and Hermes transforming their Western logos into Arabic with his designs.Email This Post
