Opening this Thursday, the first edition of Sharjah Art Foundation’s annual art book fair FOCAL POINT will feature over 88 independent, alternative and established art book publishers, institutions and individuals; eight workshops; two film screenings and an open studio. Also included in the three-day programme are a book launch, a symposium, a lecture-performance and live music by the Arfoud Brothers.
Ibrahim El-Salahi: Prison Notebook, published by Sharjah Art Foundation and The Museum of Modern Art (MoMA), New York, will have its international launch at FOCAL POINT with a talk by Dr Salah M. Hassan, Goldwin Smith Professor and Director, Institute for Comparative Modernities, Cornell University and academic advisor to The Africa Institute, Sharjah.
Also part of the FOCAL POINT programme, the collaborative symposium It Begins with a Story: Artists, Writers and Periodicals in Asia (FOCAL POINT edition) will look towards the histories and present of publishing in the wider Asia region. Developed by Asia Art Archive (Hong Kong) in partnership with Sharjah Art Foundation, this symposium marks Asia Art Archive’s first official collaboration in the UAE and GCC region.
In their lecture-performance Waiting Trajectory, Fehras Publishing Practices will examine the movement and circulation of publications along the Hijaz Railway as perceived from the train station in Damascus. The station was recently transformed into a library and book museum.Email This Post
