Team Abu Dhabi’s Shaun Torrente is primed for a major assault on the Grand Prix of China tomorrow to move back on track for back-to-back drivers’ titles in the UIM F1H2O World Championship after a difficult day in Xiamen.

Reigning champion Torrente, who arrived in China with a three-point championship lead and was fastest in yesterday’s official practice, had to settle for fourth place in today’s Grand Prix of Xiamen as Italian four-times former world title holder Alex Carella claimed his first race win for two years.

Torrente goes into the second part of the Grand Prix double header in China tomorrow just three points behind Sweden’s Jonas Andersson in the title race, with the Team Abu Dhabi mechanics working flat out overnight to help him claim back the advantage.

Team-mate Thani Al Qemzi will be looking for a complete turnaround in fortunes after being forced out of action on the 12th of 32 laps today with engine problems.

Al Qemzi and Torrente had started the Grand Prix of Xiamen from seventh and ninth places after both failed to make the third stage of qualifying, the Emirati driver missing out after picking up a time penalty for a lap infringement.

He drops to fourth in the championship, but the vast experience of the Team Abu Dhabi drivers will tell them how quickly prospects can change in F1 powerboat racing, and both will be going all out for a ninth career Grand Prix victory tomorrow.

In the F4-S series, Team Abu Dhabi’s Mohammed Al Mehairbi put in a strong start-to-finish challenge in the first of the weekend’s two races before finishing third behind German winner Max Stilz and Britain’s Harvey Smith. Team Abu Dhabi’s Rashed Al Remeithi was placed ninth.

Team Abu Dhabi’s Shaun Torrente underlined his determination to clinch a second successive drivers’ title in the UIM F1H2O World Championship today by setting the early pace at the start of a tense race weekend in China.

Carrying a slim three-points lead over Sweden’s Jonas Andersson into tomorrow’s (Saturday) Grand Prix of Xiamen, Torrente was comfortably fastest in the two-hour official practice session with a lap of 55.41 secs on the 2,516m Wuyan Bay circuit.

With Norway’s Marit Stromoy (56.39) and Italian former four-times world champion Alex Carella (56.37) clocking the two next best times, Team Abu Dhabi’s Thani Al Qemzi (56.39), lying third in the world title race, was fourth fastest.

While this year’s F1H2O World Championship concludes in Sharjah in December, developments in the Grand Prix double header in China in the space of 24 hours could decide the major issues.

The boats return to the water at 9.45am tomorrow morning for another practice session before the pole position race at 11am for the Grand Prix of Xiamen to follow at 4pm.

The frantic race programme continues with an identical schedule on Sunday culminating in the Grand Prix of China. Team Abu Dhabi’s Torrente and Al Qemzi, starting the weekend with eight Grand Prix career victories each,  hold a 32 pts lead over Team Sweden in their bid to retain the world team title.

BIG NAME STARS UNVEILED AT THRILLING PLAYER DRAFT https://english.aalmeen.com/big-name-stars-unveiled-at-thrilling-player-draft/ https://english.aalmeen.com/big-name-stars-unveiled-at-thrilling-player-draft/#respond Thu, 17 Oct 2019 12:00:41 +0000 https://english.aalmeen.com/?p=32313 MOHAMMAD AMIR SELECTED AS NO.1 PICK OF TOURNAMENT

The players who are set to light up Zayed Cricket Stadium for the inaugural Abu Dhabi T10 were locked into place at a glittering ceremony last night. The annual player draft in the nation’s capital saw 110 players allocated to eight teams, as well as a host of superstars unveiled for the first time.

The drama-filled event allowed franchises just three minutes to select the players that would make or break their teams’ success in the showpiece 10-day tournament. With big name cricketers up for grabs such as Mohammed Hafeez, Kieron Pollard, Shoaib Malik and Adil Rashid, tension crackled as players were snapped up by the franchises.

Speaking on the side-lines of the draft, CEO of Abu Dhabi Cricket, Matthew Boucher, said: “It has been an electrifying evening filled with a lot of anticipation and excitement. The teams had to make quick and snappy decisions about who they feel could steer their team to glory next month, and there have been some closely guarded strategies across the course of the night.

“The lists of names have now grown into some formidable team sheets, and with everything now assembled, we can’t wait to experience the drama and passion of T10 cricket with local fans and those around the world.”

Defending champions Northern Warriors opted for a strong West Indies side in the draw, with Darren Sammy already confirmed as the team’s icon player. The famed Andre Russell joined Sammy with three other of his compatriots, bringing the West Indies’ contingent of the team to five. Pakistan’s Wahab Riaz’s expertise was brought on board thanks to his fast-paced bowling, as part of a line-up focused on providing speedy deliveries. The Northern Warriors will begin their title defence against the Maratha Arabians on November 15.

The newest addition to the Abu Dhabi T10 tournament, Team Abu Dhabi, made some well strategized decisions during the draft, placing an emphasis on a strong bowling side. With Moeen Ali already selected as the team’s icon player, the team had successful coups with Sri Lankan powerhouse Niroshan Dickwella, Kiwi all-rounder Corey Anderson, and left-handed fast bowler Mohammad Amir. The team will present a stiff bowling line-up for its opponents.

Revealed as the mystery eighth team, Team Abu Dhabi is supported by the Abu Dhabi Sports Council, and will be trained by former England coach, Trevor Bayliss, and coach of the UAE National Cricket Team, Dougie Brown.

The Maratha Arabians chose a balanced team, opting for a mixture of a fast bowling attack and a strong batting line-up. With icon player and right-handed big hitter Chris Lynn at the helm, the team brought in the iconic Lasith Malinga in the first round of draws, ensuring the team would garner a strong following with Sri Lankan fans. West Indies heroes Dwayne Bravo and Chadwick Walton were brought on board, bringing a strong and diverse team to the table.

The West Indies all-rounder, Kieron Pollard, was quickly snapped up by the Deccan Gladiators. With Shane Watson as the icon player, the Gladiators favoured a team that was strongly led by all-rounders, with five eventually making it into the team. With a bowling line-up that mixed experience in the shape of Fawad Ahmed and the UAE’s Zahoor Khan with young talent such as England’s Mason Crane, the Deccan Gladiators adopted a varied line-up, allowing the team flexibility as they build up for the showpiece event.

The Gladiators’ first opponent on November 15 will be the Delhi Bulls, led by world-cup winning captain, Eoin Morgan. The Bulls pulled in former Pakistan captain, Shoaib Malik, to further buoy their strong batting line-up, which also includes Afghanistan’s Mohammad Nabi, Sri Lanka’s Kusal Perera, and Pakistan’s Aamer Yamin. England’s leg-spinning magician, Adil Rashid, was chosen to lead the bowling, which contains a variety of pace and spin. The team chose players from all corners of the globe, including Irishman Paul Sterling, the Dutchman Tobias Visee, and American Ali Khan, presenting a team with a strong mix of both batting power and bowling talent.

Shahid Afridi was joined by his fellow Pakistani teammate, as Team Qalandars opted to bring in “The Professor” with Mohammad Hafeez. Hafeez and Afridi joined a team comprised of 10 Pakistani players, with Imad Wasim and Faheem Ashraf also entering the fray. The team presents a bombastic batting line-up, capable of smashing balls far beyond the boundaries of Zayed Cricket Stadium, and setting high targets for teams to chase. Chris Jordan will bring his skills with the ball to a bowling squad comprised of both spin and speed. Tickets will be scarce when Team Qalandars meet Team Abu Dhabi on the opening night of the Abu Dhabi T10 on November 15.

Similar to Team Qalandars, the Bangla Tigers opted to focus on big hitting as their strategy for a chance to clutch the Abu Dhabi T10 Trophy, bringing in 12 players with impressive batting skills. Former limited overs captain, Sri Lankan Thisara Perera, serves as the team’s icon player, and will be joined by names such as West Indies’ Andre Fletcher and South Africa’s Colin Ingram. The Tigers’ batsmen will be looking to pounce against the Deccan Gladiators in their first match of the tournament on November 16.

The Karnataka Tuskers took the opposite strategic tactic to the Tigers, opting for a team that places a heavy emphasis on a predominantly speedy bowling line-up. With icon player and big hitter Hashim Amla in attendance at the draw, the Tuskers brought on bowlers such as Nepalese Sandeep Lamichhane, promising English talent Pat Brown, and the slow-left orthodox Emirati player, Ahmed Raza. With batsmen joining Hashim at the crease including Evin Lewis and Johnson Charles, the Tuskers made sure they also had a strong batting powerhouse to provide stability in a format that can twist at each and every turn.

Tickets for the Abu Dhabi T10 start from the special price of AED 10, and will allow spectators to watch up to three matches a day. To book tickets, or to receive hospitality information, please visit: https://www.q-tickets.com/abudhabit10

Minister of Climate Change and Environment: UAE to Pass Federal Law on Climate to Mainstream Adaptation, Resilience across Sectors https://english.aalmeen.com/minister-of-climate-change-and-environment-uae-to-pass-federal-law-on-climate-to-mainstream-adaptation-resilience-across-sectors/ https://english.aalmeen.com/minister-of-climate-change-and-environment-uae-to-pass-federal-law-on-climate-to-mainstream-adaptation-resilience-across-sectors/#respond Thu, 17 Oct 2019 11:54:39 +0000 https://english.aalmeen.com/?p=32306 On the sidelines of the UN Climate Action Summit in New York,His Excellency Dr Thani bin Ahmed Al Zeyoudi, UAE Minister of Climate Change and Environment, announced that the UAE will pass a federal law on climate that sets out an inclusive framework for climate action.

The law will require authorities to assess and mitigate climate risks prior to proceeding with projects, thus effectively mainstreaming climate adaptation and resilience across sectors.

He made the announcement at a session of the Global Commission on Adaptation (GCA), hosted by His Excellency Mark Rutte, Prime Minister of the Netherlands, together with the Commission’s co-chairs, His Excellency Ban Ki-moon, former UN Secretary-General, Her Excellency Kristalina Georgieva, and Bill Gates.

In his speech, His Excellency Dr Al Zeyoudi announced the UAE’s decision to join GCA that aspires to advance climate adaptation solutions.

He said: “We are delighted to join GCA and bring our perspective as a climate-vulnerable Middle Eastern country and a global donor. In this context, we have begun to mainstream resilience into UAE foreign aid. Our US$50 million UAE-Caribbean Renewable Energy Fund has seen power plants built to Category 5 hurricane standards and relocated out of vulnerable zones. The Fund also ‘builds back better’. A prime example is the newly announced green, resilient power system for Barbuda in the wake of Hurricane Irma that is planned under an innovative partnership between Antigua and Barbuda, the UAE, New Zealand, and the CARICOM Development Fund.”

He added: “We propose to partner with GCA during the world’s largest event championing sustainable development – Expo 2020 in Dubai. With 25 million expected visitors and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) at its heart, Expo 2020 will provide a powerful platform to promote GCA and its recommendations.”

Moreover, His Excellency Dr Al Zeyoudi participated in a World Economic Forum-led session on ‘Scaling Solutions for Circular Plastics’ that brought together key players across value chains to identify practical solutions to global plastic pollution as part of the 74th session of the UN General Assembly (UNGA 74).

The Minister noted that the UAE government is implementing integrated waste management projects and initiatives across the country. A prime example is the refuse-derived fuel (RDF) facility that is currently in the works and is projected to treat an average of 1,200 tons of municipal solid waste daily.

The UAE government was also the first signatory to the World Economic Forum’s SCALE 360 initiative that aims to drive the transition towards a more circular economy while using less natural resources and reducing pollution to tackle climate change. The initiative advocates the adoption of a circular economy model that leverages Fourth Industrial Revolution technologies to keep resources in use for as long as possible.

His Excellency Dr Al Zeyoudi highlighted some of the most prominent plastic recyclers in the UAE. These included Industrium Group, a pioneer manufacturer of plastic packaging for food products, Tadweer Waste Treatment, the first environmental company in the Middle East that offers integrated waste management solutions, CONSENT Plastic, a premier manufacturer of polyester straps and PET flakes with the largest production capacity in the Middle East, and Emirates Environmental Technology, one of the leading providers of high-tech environmental services for the waste management industry.

He also shared plans for the first high-impact post-consumer recycling facility for PET plastics in the country, to be established by Alliances for Global Sustainability (AGS) in Abu Dhabi and set to become fully operational by 2021. In its first phase, the facility will have the capacity to recycle approximately 19,000 metric tons of post-consumer PET bottles and food containers into food-grade PET pellets.

UAE Minister of Climate Change and Environment Highlights Country’s Approach to Enhancing Agricultural Resilience to Climate Change at Bloomberg Global Business Forum 2019 https://english.aalmeen.com/uae-minister-of-climate-change-and-environment-highlights-countrys-approach-to-enhancing-agricultural-resilience-to/ https://english.aalmeen.com/uae-minister-of-climate-change-and-environment-highlights-countrys-approach-to-enhancing-agricultural-resilience-to/#respond Wed, 16 Oct 2019 12:43:08 +0000 https://english.aalmeen.com/?p=32245 On the sidelines of the 74th session of the UN General Assembly (UNGA 74) in New York, His Excellency Dr Thani bin Ahmed Al Zeyoudi, Minister of Climate Change and Environment, participated in a breakout session on agriculture and land use, climate change, and sustainable solutions.

The panel discussion was part of the Bloomberg Global Business Forum 2019 that convened leaders from the public and private sectors worldwide to explore the threats to economic prosperity posed by climate change and identify viable solutions.

In his role as a panelist, His Excellency Dr Al Zeyoudi emphasized that the globalized nature of the food supply chain means no country, region, or continent can afford to ignore food insecurity. He explained that this challenge transcends national borders and is felt acutely in the Middle East, where growing populations in arid regions are placing pressure on the capacity of nations to feed their citizens.

The Minister said: “The UAE follows a systematic approach to ensuring the climate resilience of its agricultural sector. We rely heavily on innovation and state-of-the-art agricultural technologies to enhance food diversity and security in the face of environmental challenges, such as scarce freshwater resources and arable land, that are amplified by climate change. Modern farming solutions such as optimized greenhouse design, hydroponics, vertical agriculture, netting systems, and closed-system greenhouses significantly improve crop productivity and quality while reducing the environmental footprint.”

He added: “Diversification is the key to food security, therefore we have developed a food diversification strategy with technical support from the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) that focuses on the sustainable use of our precious natural resources, such as groundwater.”

Speaking on the country’s drive to boost local agricultural production through supporting farmers, he said: “We are implementing programs to encourage subsistence-level farmers to adopt commercial agriculture and embrace modern cultivation practices in order to increase their contributions to the local food supply. This is crucial to ensuring the long-term food security of the UAE.

“We offer farmers highly subsidized agricultural inputs at half the market price. These include high-quality crop seeds that are specially adapted to tolerate heat and consume less water while providing high yields. We also promote the sales of locally produced food commodities in both the domestic and international markets.”

Noting the vital role of R&D in ensuring food sustainability for any country, His Excellency Dr Al Zeyoudi said: “The UAE aims to make agriculture and food a priority for academic and research programs, and channel available funds into food-relevant R&D to develop solutions that are applicable to the local environment and conditions.”

Furthermore, he reiterated the UAE’s commitment to strengthening international cooperation to fuel concerted action on environmental issues. He cited the agreements signed between the UAE Ministry of Climate Change and Environment and China’s Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs and the Ministry of Agrarian Policy and Food of Ukraine as prime examples of synergies that facilitate the sharing of best practices in climate-smart agriculture.

The Minister visited the head office of New York University that has a satellite campus in Abu Dhabi, and Stevens Institute of Technology, a private research university with a mission to inspire, nurture and educate leaders in tomorrow’s technology-centric world.

Run in cooperation with American University of Sharjah (AUS) and Khalifa University (KU), the project involves collecting algae from the UAE’s desert ponds and cultivating them. The process offers a host of benefits, including sequestering CO2 and removing dust particles from the ambient air to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and other pollutants. In addition, the structures can serve as passive cooling systems for use in public spaces.

The research project also seeks to examine and classify the diverse indigenous algal strains and test the potential of using them to produce biofuel and biofertilizers. Furthermore, the scope includes an experimental study on the safe and sustainable removal of Nitrogen oxides (NOx) and Sulfur oxides (SOx) from the atmosphere.

His Excellency Dr Thani bin Ahmed Al Zeyoudi, Minister of Climate Change and Environment, said: “In line with the steadfast efforts of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, to encourage disruptive innovation across all sectors as the means to ensure a better future for current and next generations, we support environmental R & D and integrate the latest innovations to help achieve ecological sustainability and boost climate action.”

He added: “The Green Barjeel project aims to explore the prospects for using algal strains that have adapted to the UAE’s climate to provide an alternative source of energy and nutrients that enhance agricultural production. The participating scientists will capture the outcomes of the project in scientific literature that can be incorporated into educational curricula or built on in developing further innovations.”

The Ministry of Climate Change and Environment (MOCCAE) issued Ministerial Resolution No. 468 of 2019 regulating the catching of pelagic fish using encircling nets to preserve and ensure the sustainability of fish stocks.

The decree allows fishermen registered with the Ministry and running speed boats (Tarad) to use encircling nets that meet its specifications to harvest pelagic fish between November 1 and April 30 of the following year.

Per the decree, permitted fishing nets must have a length of up to 1,100 meters and a width of 20 meters in the western coast and 28 meters in the east coast, so they do not touch the seabed.

The fishing net must have one end tied to the boat and the other end attached to a light. Floaters must be two meters apart and showing the number of the fishing boat and emirate code once every ten meters.

Halima Essa Al Jasmi, Head of Fisheries Section at MOCCAE, said: “Giving fish time to replenish their stocks during their spawning season and grow to sizes that maximize their market value is critical to sustain the nation’s fisheries as well as fishermen’s livelihoods.”

The decree also prohibits fishermen from dumping damaged nets and dead fish at sea or on the shore, obliging them to dispose of them appropriately in the designated sites.

Moreover, the resolution permanently bans fishing using encircling nets in natural and man-made marine reserves, inland water bodies, such as natural and artificial lakes, waters within a 500-meter radius from petroleum fields safety zones, and all fishing waters of Abu Dhabi. The permanent fishing ban also applies in areas that fall within three nautical miles from military areas, islands, and critical coastal facilities, such as power stations and desalination plants.

The resolution stipulates that fishermen must pass through the checkpoints of the Critical Infrastructure and Coastal Protection Authority (CICPA) as they head out on and return from their fishing trips. They also need to inform the CICPA centers of the fishing port they are registered under and notify them in case of changing their ports.
