- Free Tatreez embroidery workshops on November 12 – 17 at Dubai Design District
As part of Facebook’s initiative to bring together and celebrate the burgeoning Arab art and design community during Dubai Design Week, UAE social enterprise 81 Designs will conduct free-to-attend interactive workshops for those who would like to learn or hone cross-stitching skills. Taking place every afternoon from November 12 to 17 at Dubai Design District, the activity aims to preserve a traditional Middle Eastern embroidery technique Tatreez.
Tatreez (cross stitch) is the oldest form of embroidery and widely used in traditional Palestinian dressmaking. It was the primary embellishment in women’s clothing and a reflection of a woman’s social status. A part of the daily routine in old villages, women used to work collectively on embroidery projects until it has become a traditional craft passed from generation to generation. During the political unrest, Tatreez has become a coded language used to express opinions and share stories – a symbol of resistance, identity and heritage.
During each 1.5-hour workshop, participants can learn how the traditional craft originated and get hands-on experience sewing in 4” x 4” canvases. The materials which will be provided to the participants were collated and prepared by the Palestinian refugee women that 81 Designs is working with. With limited seats available, those who are interested are encouraged to register on 81 Designs’ Facebook event page.
