Mina Rashid development, QE-2 hotel and MJP centre presented at the show

DP World, UAE Region, the Middle East’s leading regional trade enabler shared its project management experience at the Big 5 International Building & Construction Show in Dubai.

This year’s theme of “Shaping the Future of Construction” brought together the biggest names in the global construction industry. A major feature was the Big 5 Talks on project management challenges and practices in the region.

A highlight of DP World’s participation was a speech by Adnan Al Abbar, Senior Vice President, Group Planning and Project Management, DP World, on Project Management Practice in the Development of Mina Rashid and the conversion of the famous ocean cruise liner vessel QE-2 into a successful hotel.

Al Abbar also presented a case study on DP World’s Michael Johnson Performance (MJP), a world class sports performance training and fitness centre, which is scouting young athletic talent in the UAE. It represents DP World’s commitment to investing in the UAE sports industry and help drive new opportunities for youth, while developing the region as a global sporting hub.

Mohammed Al Muallem, CEO and Managing Director, DP World, UAE Region, said:

“Dubai is known worldwide for its iconic projects and our leadership’s vision and foresight have seen one of the most exciting cities rise literally from desert sands. DP World is a product of this culture of visionary entrepreneurship that has transformed us into a global trade enabler with a footprint in over 40 countries and six continents. Our global portfolio entails several outstanding examples with our flagship Jebel Ali Port being of  special significance.”

“After almost 40 years, it remains the largest man-made harbour in the world and can be seen from space.  At Mina Rashid, Dubai’s original container port, we have created a world class cruise terminal and have opened a floating hotel on the refurbished ocean liner, the QE-2. The Big 5 International Building and Construction Show is an ideal platform to showcase our global projects, both past and on-going.”

The Big 5 Talk Series delivers world-class educational programmes and knowledge-sharing sessions, are CPD (Continuing Professional Development, UK) accredited and free to attend. Features include a Live Innovation Zone with new construction ideas in one location coupled with interactive demonstrations.  Other highlights are a Start-Up City, FutureTech Construction Summit and Women in Construction.

The creation of Jafza in 1985 provided the building and construction sectors needed support to see rapid growth, serving as an ideal gateway for businesses and investors seeking opportunities in non-oil & gas related industries and spurring the diversification of Dubai’s economy.

Metal, Steel & Construction Materials, and Construction Machinery & Equipment have been key segments for Jafza since the free zone was established, surrounding Jebel Ali Port to enable trade in the region. This importance is reflected in 2017’s trade figures, when volumes reached 3.3 million metric tonnes for a total value of AED 19.4 billion. Over 1,100 companies from 91 countries are registered with Jafza, including industry-leading firms such as Danube, TATA Steel, Conares, and Caterpillar, and provide employment to over 20,000 people.
