DUPREE BOWS OUT IN STYLE WITH UNITECHNIK WIN

in Sports by

Mark Dupree had a day to remember as he won his final event as a Sharjah Golf & Shooting Club, taking the May edition of the Unitechnik Monthly Stableford.  Dupree, a member for 8 years, moves on in June but put all his years of experience to good use as he negotiated 38 Stableford points and a 2 point winning margin over nearest challengers Jaydeep Sarkar (9) and George Lui (3).  An emotional Dupree commented “It really is great to win my last event as a member of SGSC.  I’ve had a wonderful 8 years at the club, made many good friends and enjoyed lots of fantastic memories. This really is the icing on the cake”.  Nathan Fisher (+3) once again took the leading gross prize while inaugural Golf Club Captain Mel Stewart took Division B as a result of Sarkar missing the presentation.

Victory Team prepares for F2 and Aquabikes assault

in Sports by

The Victory Team duo of Mansoor Al Mansoori and Khalfan Suhail Al Muhairi will mount their first serious challenge on the UIM F2 World Championship at the season-opening Grand Prix of Lithuania on the Kaunas Reservoir, this weekend.

Al Mansoori, who went on to win the F4 world crown ahead of F1 Atlantic Team’s Jeremy Brisset and Team Abu Dhabi’s Mohammed Al Muhairbi last season, has been promoted from F4 to F2.

Team Abu Dhabi’s Rashid Al Qemzi is the defending champion in the F2 category that has witnessed the dominance of Swedish drivers led by Erik Stark’s four titles (from 2011 to 2014) and Pierre Lundin’s two world crowns in 2015 and 2016.

This week’s opening round of the F2 World Championship in Kaunas will be followed by the second round in Aalborg, Denmark in mid-June before moving on to Tonsberg, Norway (August 4-5), Ribadouro, Portugal (September 22-23) and finally on to Colombo, Sri Lanka (November 10-11).

For Team Abu Dhabi’s Al Qemzi it will be a return to the scene of his maiden UIM F2 World crown as he begins his title defence at the opening round that will also feature the FR-1000 European Championship.

“The objective is to always be number one on the podium. But this is powerboat racing and anything can happen to even the best. We are confident of doing well and getting a few points in this class of powerboat racing,” Huraiz Bin Huraiz, Chairman of the Board of Directors at Victory Team narrated.

“The basic idea is to see how our drivers do in this class. This season we have deliberately moved along nearly all existing classes of powerboat racing and we are confident that our youth can deliver the goods for the blue boats,” he added.

Racing on the two-kilometre, six-pin F2 course will get under way at 10.15hrs (9.15 am UAE) on Saturday, with three hours and two sessions of free practice after technical scrutineering and administration checks the previous day.

Three qualifying sessions for two groups of drivers will then start at 14.30hrs (1.30 pm UAE) and the day’s action will conclude with the Speed Run and traditional Match Races, starting at 17.00hrs (4 pm UAE). A further free practice for Group A teams will start at 10.00hrs (9 am UAE) on Sunday and precedes Group B warm-up at 10.45hrs (9.45 am UAE) and the Repecharge race (for the slowest qualifiers) at 13.00hrs (12 noon UAE). The Grand Prix of Lithuania will get the green flag at 15.30hrs (2.30 pm UAE).

Reiterer braces for aquabikes assault in Gallipoli

in Sports by

Austrian ace Kevin Reiterer will be on board as Victory Team makes its entry into the aquabikes sector at the opening round of the 2018 UIM-ABP Aquabike World Championship that gets under way in Gallipoli, Italy, this weekend.

The five-time former world champion, who will turn 26 in August this year, signed up with Victory Team last month as their lone entry in the Ski Division GP1 with the tacit focus of mounting a challenge for the world title in his very first season with the Dubai-based outfit.

Friday witnessed a huge turnout of riders in the Runabout GP1 and this necessitated that 18 of the 29 sign-ins had to face a 20-minute pre-qualifying session to fill the 14 available slots as per rules laid down by the UIM. It was Denmark’s Marcus Jorgensen easing his way into official qualifying with a best lap of 1:57.30 minutes, leaving Italy’s Mattia Fracasso and Hungary’s Gyorgy Kasza in second and third respectively.

With Chris Wilkinson as the manager of the aquabike division, Victory Team is confident of establishing a fully functioning squad of young riders from the UAE. “We are aware of the immense talent that a professional like Kevin brings to the table in the world of aquabikes. Since this is the first-ever season for Victory Team we decided to have a racer of his caliber to lead our charge for the world crown,” noted Huraiz Al Mur Huraiz, Chairman of the Board of Directors of Victory Team.

The weekend’s racing is being organised by BeFree Sports & More under the auspices of the UIM and the Federazione Italiana Motonautica and Aquabike Promotion Ltd.

The Grand Prix will also feature racing in the Runabout GP1, Ski Ladies GP1 and Freestyle categories with two competitive heats on Saturday and Sunday. After further free practice at 12.25hrs, Moto 1 (Heat 1) will start at 16.30hrs, with the timetable for a second practice session and Moto 2 being repeated at the same times on Sunday.

Reiterer will next head for the second round to nearby Olbia in Italy followed by a couple of rounds in China with stops in Nansha (from September 14-16) and Shanghai (September 21-23). The riders will then turn to the UAE for the final two rounds in Dubai (November 15-17) and finally in Sharjah (December 11-14).

Ten years of Audi Sport customer racing Audi electrifies Berlin: one-two finish in Formula E home race

in Sports by
  • Daniel Abt wins ahead of team mate Lucas di Grassi in Berlin
  • Audi Sport ABT Schaeffler becomes the first ever Formula E team to score maximum points
  • Audi e-tron FE04 the outstanding car in Berlin-Tempelhof

Audi electrified Berlin with a fairytale finish at the Formula E home race. Thanks to pole position, a dominant one-two finish and the fastest race lap, Audi Sport ABT Schaeffler is the first team to score maximum points on a race day of the electric racing series.

The beaming and enthusiastically celebrated winner by the Berlin public was called Daniel Abt. The 25-year old German produced a perfect performance at his home race. Despite having to qualify in the unfavored first group, Abt qualified effortlessly for the single timed lap for the fastest five, where he threw down the gauntlet and easily clinched the first three points for the second pole position of his Formula E career. This was followed by a dominant start-finish victory and as crowning glory the point for the fastest race lap.

“That was probably the most important win of my career so far and an incredible day from beginning to end,” said Daniel Abt, after having been presented with the winner’s trophy from German Transport Minister Andreas Scheuer.

The Audi one-two finish in the home race in Berlin was made perfect by Lucas di Grassi. The defending Champion set the fastest lap in qualifying with his Audi e-tron FE04, but then had a short slide that dropped him down to fifth on the grid. After the start, the Brazilian needed only twelve laps to move his way up to second place. Thanks to a faster pit stop, the Brazilian caught up with his team mate and subsequently drove effortlessly home in second place. The third placed Jean-Eric Vergne in Techeetah was already more than twelve seconds behind at the checkered flag.

In the drivers’ championship, both Daniel Abt and Lucas di Grassi improved before the last three races in Zürich (June 10) and New York (July 14/15) to take fourth and sixth places respectively. Abt is only one point shy of third place in the standings.

“It was a fantastic race for us,” said Head of Audi Motorsport Dieter Gass. “The first one-two for Audi since the Formula E factory program started and the first ever for the team – and all this in the home race! Daniel achieved the maximum possible and Lucas made the day perfect for us. My congratulations go to everybody who has worked so hard for this. It’s very rare that you see such a big advantage in a Formula E race.”

PIPER & MORLEY WIN SGSC RAMADAN OPEN

in Sports by

GESKES ACHIEVES HOLE IN ONE

The British pairing of Clive Piper (EGF – 8) and Andrew Morley (8) won Sharjah Golf & Shooting Clubs Ramadan Pairs Shambles Open at the weekend with an unsurpassed total of 50 points.  For the first time in the events 9 year history the championship was a Pairs Betterball Shambles format from the black tee for the first loop of 9 and the red (ladies tees) for the second loop of 9 with both players scores to count on holes 3, 6, 13 and 17 – to add a little further seasonal spice ot he afternoon.  32 players competed with SGSC pairing Adhip Shankar and Satwinder Sembi taking the silver medal on 49 points.  Former SGSC Ladies Club Champion 12 year old Jamie Camero and guest Snigdha Goswami (TEC) took 3rd on 48 points.

Shot of the day was undoubtedly achieved by SGSC Member Martin Geskes who achieved his first ever ace on the 17th hole (a 9 iron from 150 yards).  Ironically, due to the Shambles format, it meant that technically partner Raymi Van Der Spek (EGF) also recorded a hole in one, without hitting a shot!  To further escalate the excitement it was a two scores to count hole meaning both players achieved 4 points for an almost unsurpassable total of 8 points on one hole!  Despite the boost the pair were only able to manage 43 points and overall 10th place.

BANGLADESHI MOTOR SPORT TRAINEES GET KEY LESSON ON DUBAI’S WORLD CUP STAGE

in Sports by

  • Sulayem says volunteers will return home with new knowledge, experience to help develop sport

Motor sport in Bangladesh may be still in its infancy, but the development process will gather pace on the World Cup stage in Dubai next week.

A team of 28 trainee volunteers from the Automobile Association of Bangladesh (AAB) will gain invaluable experience on the staging of a top-class cross country rally during the Dubai International Baja powered by Nissan and AW Rostamani.

The event is the second round of this year’s FIA World Cup for Cross Country Rallies for cars and buggies and the opening round of the FIM Bajas World Cup for bikes and quads, and for the young Bangladeshi visitors it represents an important step in their motor sport education.

“We are very happy to be hosting a group from the AAB and look forward to showing them what it takes to stage a rally at the top level,” said Mohammed Ben Sulayem, President of the Automobile and Touring Club for the UAE and Emirates Motor Sport Federation, the rally organisers.

“Volunteers play a crucial role in motor sport, and our intention is that they will return to Bangladesh with a great deal of fresh knowledge and experience which can be put to good use to help develop the sport there.”

Three years ago Sulayem, the FIA Vice President for sport, sent a team from the ATCUAE’s training and education division, the Motorsport Knowledge Institute (MKI), to Dhaka to instruct AAB officials on key aspects of rally organisation and other grass roots motor sport activities.

The ATCUAE team was led by Ronan Morgan who is Clerk of the Course for the Dubai International Baja powered by Nissan and AW Rostamani, taking place from 8-10 March place under the patronage of H.H. Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, the Crown Prince of Dubai

The ATCUAE, which represents motor sport’s world governing body, the FIA, set up the MKI to deliver motor sport training worldwide after being awarded Regional Training Provider status by the FIA Institute in 2012.

The Dubai International Baja gets under way with a 5pm ceremonial start on Thursday March 8 at Dubai Autodrome, the new Rally HQ.

The second edition of the event sends a powerful line-up of cars, buggies, bikes and quads into action over a demanding 174 km special stage running through the dramatic Al Qudra desert terrain on  Friday, March 9, and Saturday, March 10.

Extreme Success For Thomas And Lefebvre

in Sports by

David Thomas and Pierre Lefebvre battled the challenging Extreme Pairs event finishing 2 clear at the top of the leaderboard. The mixed medley formatted event grows in popularity year on year as competitors challenge the course with 3 varying 6 hole formats. The first six holes saw probably the most challenging in the form of greensomes. This slight twist on foursomes sees both competitors tee off before alternate shots come into play. David and Pierre conquered this format comfortably with 4 birdies for a total of 20, a score only bettered by Marta and Subhojit Biswas who produced one better with a score of 19.  The next 6 holes provided what should be the easiest part of the competition, betterball. Unbelievably no one bettered the par of 23 through this supposed tough stretch of holes, with the top 3 eventual winning pairings dropping a combined 5 shots. The final 6 holes saw the popular scramble format come into action with no minimum drives required. David and Pierre managed to pick up another birdie in their final six to finish on their winning total of 68, 4 under par. The runner-up duo of Dave Hoggins and John Wilby carded 70 following sixes of 22, 23 and 25, a score also matched by the husband and wife pairing of Subhojit and Marta Biswas. Unfortunately Subhojit and Marta had to settle for the last podium place following a loss in a back nine card play-off.

Tournament Winners

1st Place

David Thomas & Pierre Lefebvre – 68

2nd Place

Dave Hoggins & John Wilby – 70

3rd Place

Subhojit & Marta Biswas – 70
