in Health by

  • The 10-week long “RAK Biggest Weight Loser Challenge” commences from February 17th and ends on April 28th, with fabulous prizes for the ‘biggest losers’
  • Winners to get Dhs 500 for each kg lost
  • Open to all RAK residents over 18 years of age
  • At least 70 per cent of men and 67 per cent of women aged 15 years and older considered overweight in the UAE

Continuing its drive towards a fit and healthy UAE, RAK Hospital, in association with Ministry of Health and Prevention, Ras Al Khaimah, has announced the launch of the “RAK Biggest Weight Loser Challenge” in the emirate. Open to all RAK residents over the age of 18, the 10-week challenge will commence from February 17th and end on April 28th, 2018, with fabulous prizes for winners who will lose the maximum amount of weight. Residents can get themselves registered for the contest at RAK Hospital on February 17th.

The campaign was inaugurated by Ms. Fatema Saeed Al Shehhi, Head of Health Education, RAK Medical District, Ministry of Health and Prevention, Ras Al Khaimah, in the presence of dignitaries from RAK Hospital.

“Ras Al Khaimah Medical District, represented by the Department of Health Education and Promotion has associated with RAK Hospital to organize the RAK Biggest Loser. This association falls within the framework of the Ministry of Health and Prevention’s strategy to provide innovative and sustainable methods to provide comprehensive and integrated health care and to implement the UAE Vision 2021 National Agenda that includes reducing obesity. The initiative is supervised by government and private community and aims to enable society members to make positive changes to prevent obesity risks and help them gradually change to a healthy lifestyle. It will also help participants to improve their healthy eating habits, which will allow them to reach and maintain an ideal weight. The initiative also includes a 10-week follow-up plan to reach and maintain the positive changes in the individuals’ life,” said Fatema Saeed Al Shehhi.

Obesity is among the growing health concerns in the UAE, with at least 70 per cent of men and 67 per cent of women aged 15 years and older considered overweight. Globally, it is a leading preventable cause of death, and regarded as one of the most serious public health problems of the 21st century. News reports also state that world over, obesity is the fastest growing global risk, and one in five deaths are the result of the condition. In the UAE, unhealthy eating habits, socio economic factors, and a disregard for an active lifestyle all contribute towards growing obesity.

Commenting on the launch, Dr Raza Siddiqui, CEO Arabian Healthcare Group and Executive Director, RAK Hospital, said, “The main aim is to motivate UAE residents to re-route their dietary and exercise habits so that they lead a healthier lifestyle eventually. We would specially like to encourage people with a higher BMI to participate in the event with the hope that the initiative will be first step towards a fit and healthy you. Ten weeks is a long time to build a habit, and I’m confident that once people experience the value of a healthy life, they will never go back to their old ways”.

At the time of registration the doctors at the hospital will record participants’ weight, height and BMI and blood pressure. At the conclusion of the competition, RAK Hospital will invite all participants to visit the premises for weight calculation to draw a comparison from the original records. Participants will also be provided with weekly weight-recording sheets. Surgical weight loss will not be allowed. One participant each from male and female categories will be awarded with the cash prize. Making every kilo count, the winners will be decided depending on maximum weight loss, with Dhs 500 awarded for every kilo the two participants lose. Besides cash prizes, winners also have a chance to win six annual gym vouchers and annual health packages and spa vouchers at RAK Hospital.

“It’s a win-win situation, when you think about it,” added Dr Jean Marc Gauer, CEO, RAK Hospital, “The very fact that you will shed a few kilos is in itself a huge achievement, and I hope that the motivation lives on long after the contest gets over. Through this exercise, we want to practically convey how a healthy lifestyle can have a positive influence on our bodies, psyche and productivity. We are all aware of the perils of obesity and the fact that it is the root cause of many diseases, both mental and physical; yet we tend to ignore its affect, and this is what needs to be addressed head on.”

Thanking the Ministry of Health and Prevention, Ras Al Khaimah, Dr Yasmin Shaikh, Group Marketing Head, Arabian Healthcare Group said: “We at RAK Hospital would like to extend our deepest gratitude to the MoHAP, RAK, especially to Ms Fatema Saeed Al Shehhi, for being with us today, as we take our fight against obesity to a new level”.

RAK Hospital recently ran the Blue Ring Challenge, encouraging residents across Dubai and Ras Al Khaimah to assess their diabetic health and take proactive measures to improve it. The hospital has a number of CSR and awareness campaigns under its belt with the aim to improve the health quotient of the UAE population.

Q&A – DR. FRANCISCO DE MELO CONSULTANT PLASTIC SURGEON

in Health by
  1. Can you tell us about Tummy Tuck-body contouring? How effective is this procedure in getting rid of excess body fat?

Tummy tuck, also known as abdominoplasty removes excess fat and skin, and in most cases, restores weakened or separated muscles creating an abdominal profile that is smoother and firmer. It is usually combined with liposuction to achieve a better contour and well-defined waistline.

But one must know that tummy tucks are not a substitute for weight loss or an appropriate exercise program. Also, tummy tuck operations cannot correct stretch marks, although these may be removed or somewhat improved if they are located on the areas of excess skin that will be excised, generally the treated areas below the belly button.

A tummy tuck is an in-patient procedure performed under general or epidural anaesthesia. One must consider a downtime of 7 to 10 days and after that, they can return to daily activities but not physical exercise. After one month, in most cases, there will be no restrains.

  1. How is Mini-Abdominoplasty different from Abdominoplasty?

Mini-Abdominoplasty or a mini tummy tuck is a less extensive variation of the full abdominoplasty and is typically employed when loose abdominal muscles and a minimal amount of excess skin are confined to the lower abdomen below the belly button.

The goal is to remove the excess fat and skin, but only from the lower abdomen, without having to transpose the navel, as in a full abdominoplasty. The skin incision and the scar are smaller, and it is usually combined with a liposuction of the upper and lateral abdomen. When there is an existing scar, like the one from a cesarian, we can use it to remove the excess skin and so improve the tightening of the lower abdomen. The post-op recovery is also better tolerated and faster than with a traditional abdominoplasty, but this is also a hospital-based surgery usually with an overnight stay.

  1. Liposuction is known to be an effective fat removal procedure. Can you tell us how does Liposuction work? Is it different from Liposculpture?

Liposuction and Liposculpture are two words for the same procedure. The technique is similar, and I think that the word “Liposculpture” is more a marketing-driven word. There are other words like “Liposelection”, “Vibrolipoplasty”, ”SmartLipo”, and so on, that are much more related to the devices that are used, than the purpose behind them that is removing fat. I think that Lipoplasty is the right term.

The principle behind these techniques is to remove fat in a way that will improve the body contour. They should be small or minimal invasive, and the fat will be excised through small skin incisions (2-5mm) using a cannula connected to a vacuum pump or a syringe. These can be done with the help of different power assisted systems: Mechanical ( Microair, Vibrolipoplasty, Water Jet System), Ultrasound assisted (UAL), Laser (LAL) or Radiofrequency (RAL).  Liposuction can be performed in very different areas, as the neck, arms, abdomen, back, buttocks, thighs, knees, male breast, etc. It can be done under general or under local anaesthesia, depending essentially on the extent of the procedure and the risk factors of the patient. The extent of the procedure also defines the regime (outpatient or inpatient) as the duration of the recovery period.

  1. Tell us about buttocks augmentation and the different types of techniques that are involved?

Buttocks augmentation is a procedure that reshapes and enhances your gluteal area, providing you with an uplifted and shapelier buttock profile. The purpose is to augment and reshape the buttocks, improving is projection. This can be done in three different ways:

  1. Enhancement with Fillers: The shape and volume of buttocks will be enhanced by injecting hyaluronic acid (HA). It works like a “filler” and the substance is very safe and used for other cosmetic procedures, like lip augmentation, facial and hands rejuvenation, etc. The procedure varies from case to case and can be performed under local anaesthesia. As the HA will be reabsorbed by your body, it will need annual touch-ups to maintain or increase the volume.
  2. Fat graft or lipofilling: In this technique, we use the patient’s fat instead of the HA. So, at first a liposuction is performed to collect the amount of fat that we need, it will be further processed and then transferred to fill the buttocks. The only limitation of this procedure is the amount of fat available (“donor areas”) and the desired volume. The downtime will be determined by these factors but usually, it will take from 7 to 10 days. Sometimes there is a need for a second procedure in order to obtain symmetry and if a bigger volume is desired.
  1. Buttocks implants: If the desired volume cannot be obtained by the previous techniques the option is to implant a prosthesis to achieve the desired goal. There are some drawbacks with this procedure, mainly the physical stress resulting from the procedure – sitting, lying on the back, walking, jogging, workouts and so on. In order to protect the implant, it is placed inside the Gluteus muscle. This is a major surgery and the recovery period will be longer (up to one month).
  1. Can you tell us about Arm Lift and Thigh Lift? How different or similar are these procedures from one another?

Thigh Lift is a procedure to correct the loose and drooping skin of the inner thighs. It is usually performed under general anaesthesia, and with a relatively long recovery period. The incision and the resulting scars are placed on the groin and inner face of the thighs, depending on the extension of the procedure. It is usually indicated for massive weight loss patients and when liposuction alone is not enough. Arms Lift is the same procedure than the previous one, but directed to the arms in the same situation and when liposuction is not sufficient due to skin laxity. The resulting scar is located on the inner face of the arms and in the armpit. The recovery period is short (one week) and is also conditioned by the extension of the surgery. This is frequently combined with other cosmetic procedures.

  1. Is it true that we can also augment and shape calves? Does this procedure affect the muscle in any way?

Yes, we can also augment or reshape the calves. The procedure is called Calf Enhancement. Basically, we use the fat, Hyaluronic Acid (Macrolane) or implants in this procedure. The goal of the procedure is to obtain a better contour of the leg, usually in the inner part, by increasing the volume. The fat graft can offer a definitive result but usually, needs a second procedure to obtain a good symmetry and volume.

A liposuction is needed for this procedure to collect the necessary fat; it’s an invasive procedure. With Macrolane, (office based procedure), it will be simpler but you will need annual touch-ups to maintain or increase the volume. I generally don’t prefer and recommend implants in this area because the skin is very thin and elastic in this area; so, the risks of getting a visible implant or extrusion are high, especially in women. The downtime in this procedure varies with the technique and will be around 1 day for Macrolane and 7 days for the fat graft.

Swiss medical tourism from Middle East feeling benefit from US policies affecting Muslims

in Health by
  • Leading Swiss healthcare group expects growing flow of patients from region as Arab travellers turn their backs on America

Medical tourism traffic into Switzerland from the Middle East could receive a big shot in the arm from the effects of US President Donald Trump’s treatment of Muslims, one of the country’s leading healthcare groups believes.

Andres Oppenheim, General Manager of the renowned Nescens Clinique de Genolier, sees a growing flow of Middle East patients opting for Swiss medical checks and treatments after turning their backs on America.

The luxury clinic, which is exclusively dedicated to preventative medicine and anti-aging programmes, is part of the renowned Swiss Medical Network which combines more than 1,250 doctors and specialists all over Switzerland

Oppenheim, who has been attending the Family Office Forum in Dubai this week, said: “Trump’s policies are having a very negative effect on Muslims, as they are on a lot of other people, and medical healthcare into Switzerland is one of the beneficiaries.

“People in the Middle East who need an immediate medical solution will always find it because they’re strongly connected to top hospitals and clinics worldwide. In fact they have very good hospitals here so they don’t even need to get on a plane.

“But a lot of people here who look after their personal health capital are used to travelling to the USA for checks up and treatments at some of the leading hospitals and clinics there. Now, however, because of the current political situation in the US, they are no longer keen to travel there.

“At the same time they know they will always be very well received in Switzerland. Swiss excellence in specialist healthcare and hospitality is well known to Arab audiences.

“That has been made very clear to me in Dubai this week,” said Oppenheim. “The Swiss Medical Network, and the Nescens Clinique de Genolier in particular, are already very well established in this market and we expect a growing number of discerning Middle Eastern travellers who demand the very best in medical treatment and hospitality.”

Offering discreet, bespoke services for short, medium and long-term stays, the Clinique provides preventative and regenerative medicine, genetic screenings, nutrition advice, physical and osteo-articular care, as well as aesthetic medicine and anti-aging programmes. Patients can book their stays in residences offering a full range of five-star hotel services.

Middle East visitors can access additional services such as the clinic’s centre of expertise in physiotherapy, sport coaching, stem cell treatments, aesthetic medicine and dental care, all offered in an exclusive setting with first-class services.

Nestled high above Lake Geneva, the clinic is located within the world renowned Clinique de Genolier. For more information on Nescens Clinique de Genolier and its individualised anti-aging programmes, visit www.nescens.co

Reaching its conclusion at the Palace Hotel Downtown in Dubai this evening (7 February), the two-day Family Office Forum in Dubai attracted more than 100 Family Offices, Principals and UHNWIs for a series of presentations, CIO roundtables and networking.

Blogger sheds 22 kg in less than 12 weeks thanks to CosmeSurge

in Health by
  • Dina, 39, struggled with weight gain for 7 years, said, “I went from a size 20 to a size 16”

In 2017, an estimated 70 per cent of men and 67 per cent of women in the UAE aged 15 years are considered overweight. Dina, a 39-year-old blogger, was among them and struggled with weight gain for seven years. In less than twelve weeks, Dina has shed 22 kg in a transformation that began with a visit to CosmeSurge and Emirates Hospitals Wellness & Obesity Centre, a member of NMC Health.

“I’ve tried many different diets and exercises but it seems like nothing is working for me. It takes such a long time to lose weight and after so much effort, not even one per cent of it was gone,” Dina explained. “My friend had recommended a very good place called Emirates Hospitals Wellness & Obesity Centre, who referred her to CosmeSurge. After I saw the amazing results, I decided to do a consultation.”

CosmeSurge, which is also a member of NMC Health, provides the most modern and highest-quality, aesthetic derma and plastic treatments. “During my visit with the general surgeon, I was convinced of the benefits for receiving a mini-gastric bypass. I was very impressed with the all the steps taken before my operation. Now, I’m ready to start my journey,” added Dina.

Emirates Hospitals Wellness & Obesity Centre promotes a healthy lifestyle for people like Dina through a multidisciplinary approach, rather than depending entirely on surgical procedures. The centre’s comprehensive and focused approach, which includes the expertise of CosmeSurge’s surgeons, along with in-house dieticians and fitness specialists, ensure that every patient achieves the best possible results.

Dr Roger Batrouni, CosmeSurge’s Specialist General Surgeon, explained, “Dina weighed 120 kgs and had a BMI of 42.5, so I suggested a mini-gastric bypass. This is a laparoscopic surgery and it is bypass with two parts. The first part is restrictive, so we reduce the amount of food that she can intake and the second part is reducing the absorption of certain food elements.”

This procedure helps eaters who have a ‘sweet tooth’ as sugars are not absorbed by the intestines. Usually, the patient loses weight quickly within the first 6 months and this slows down but continues until a year has passed, explained Dr Batrouni. Other than losing weight, this procedure helps reduce or cure other conditions like diabetes, hypertension, high cholesterol, and others.

“After a mini-gastric bypass, you can start work after one week and begin to eat normally as well as exercise after one month. I’m excited to see Dina after three months as it always brings me joy to see how happy my patients are with the results,” Dr Batrouni concluded, prior to the surgery.

Haig Balekian, Exercise Therapist, helped Dina with exercise routines that are critically important both before and after the surgery. Simultaneously, Dina was referred to Dr Nadine Andari, Senior Dietician, in order to help Dina lose weight and reduce the size of her liver to facilitate the operation. After the surgery, Dr Andari provided Dina with a liquid food plan for two weeks, followed by a mashed food plan for two weeks.

In less than three months, the results of the procedure combined with a fitness programme and diet plan has been transformational.

“I already lost 22 kilograms and I went from a size 20 to a size 16.  I am so happy. I live very normally and I don’t need to worry about anything.  I’ve started exercising and doing a variety of activities without any hesitation,” exclaimed Dina. “I should thank Dr Roger and the entire team at CosmeSurge and Emirates Hospitals Wellness & Obesity Centre for their professionalism and constant support throughout this entire process. I feel very confident about myself and this is only the beginning. I can’t wait to see what will happen in a year’s time.”
