Jaguar Classic has completed a bespoke XK120 sports car restoration commissioned by renowned British male model and life-long Jaguar enthusiast David Gandy.

The 11-month project, which was a close collaboration between David Gandy and Jaguar Classic’s experts at its Classic Works facility in Warwickshire, took 2,700 hours to complete.

Following a brief to make it race-ready for classic motorsport events such as the Jaguar Classic Challenge, the car’s specification is inspired by the original XK120 Lightweight.

David Gandy, said: “Having driven a Jaguar XK120 at the Mille Miglia in 2013 and 2014, I knew that I wanted to own one of these incredibly special cars. The team at Jaguar Classic have done such a remarkable job engineering this car and executing everything that I asked for and it was amazing to have such an in-depth involvement in its creation.”

Jaguar Classic’s dedicated sourcing team tracked-down a suitable 1954 base car in California, US, and has retained as much of the original car as possible.

The in-line six-cylinder unit was meticulously rebuilt over five and a half months, with the final objective to use the car for racing. The result is a performance upgrade from the original 180bhp output to 225bhp and enhanced durability for higher speeds, with items like the core plugs featuring steel bracing so they don’t dislodge during high-performance driving. An all-new, upgraded exhaust system features dual pipes instead of the usual single pipe.

Further improvements include the use of a faster-shifting racing-style gearbox which is more durable under high stresses and uprated brakes, with the front set-up now featuring disc brakes with four-pot calipers while the rear retains the original refurbished drum brakes. The suspension features fully adjustable dampers, allowing the Classic team to fine tune the handling for specific events.

Calum McKechnie, Head of Jaguar Classic, said: This unique XK120 showcases the expertise, skill and craftmanship that Jaguar Classic makes available for all of its customers. Not only were we able to bring this iconic sports car back to life mechanically, but the attention to detail and the bespoke design of the interior sets David’s car apart.”

The design and finishing touches were created in collaboration with David, who chose the colour and materials at every step of the renovation. The exterior is finished in solid black, made up of 13 litres and four coats of paint, while additional exterior features include a racing-inspired flip-top fuel cap. The original split-screen windscreen has been replaced by twin aero screens, another feature synonymous with the XK120 Lightweight.

Inside, the car is just as unique. Finished in an Aged Saddle tan leather, the seats feature a bespoke lattice design with the seatbacks finished in aluminium rather than the usual fabric material. While two batteries would usually sit behind the driver’s seat, for this car the Classic team put a single battery behind the passenger seat to free up space behind the driver, to enhance comfort for 6ft 2inch tall David. This was also a consideration for the choice of steering wheel, which is smaller than normal to provide more legroom.

The finished car was handed-over to its delighted owner, who intends to use it on road and in competition, ahead of last weekend’s Monaco E-Prix race.

DC Aviation Al-Futtaim receives IS-BAH accreditation for its Ground Handling operations

in Business by

DC Aviation Al-Futtaim (DCAF), a joint venture between Stuttgart-based DC Aviation GmbH and Dubai-based Al-Futtaim, has attained the International Standard for Business Aircraft Handling (IS-BAH) Stage 1 accreditation for its Fixed Base Operations (FBO) located at Dubai South.

IS-BAH is the global industry standard on safety management and risk mitigation for business aviation handlers and meets the forthcoming safety management system (SMS) requirements. The audit was conducted by an independent auditor from the International Business Aviation Council (IBAC).

DCAF successfully achieved compliance with the FBO’s emergency and security procedures, airside operations, organisational structure, training protocols and operating procedures and ground support equipment.

Commenting on the accreditation, Susan Bujtas, Director of Ground Operations at DC Aviation Al-Futtaim said, “The successful completion of the audit was a result of months of hard work from all the teams involved and the continuous support of the management. The accreditation is further testament to our unwavering commitment to provide our customers with globally benchmarked services.”

Terry Yeomans, Programme Director for the IS-BAH from IBAC, said, “I would like to congratulate the DC Aviation Al-Futtaim team for successfully completing the IS-BAH audit. The team have demonstrated a strong commitment to safety and meeting all the requirements for the IS-BAH.”

“Having the safety of their customers and team members close at heart, DC Aviation Al-Futtaim logically implemented the IS-BAH and successfully passed a Stage 1 audit. It’s no small feat in itself but DC Aviation Al-Futtaim stands out for two reasons: first, they achieved this in a highly competitive environment; and second, their Safety Management System already showed signs that several of its elements were beyond the Stage 1 requirements and on the right track toward Stage 2. There’s only one thing I can say to the entire team, congratulations and keep up the excellent work,” said Stéphane De Wolf, Business Aviation ISBAH Auditor.

Majid Al Futtaim has also received a “low risk” environmental, social and governance (ESG) rating by Sustainalytics, an independent ESG auditor, certifying the company is at ‘low risk’ of experiencing financial impact from ESG factors, due to its low exposure and effective management of ESG issues.

The company has a proven track record of applying green building best practices across its portfolio. In 2018, the company received the ‘Green Star’ rating by Global Real Estate Sustainability Benchmarks (GRESB) for the fifth consecutive year, in recognition for its sustainable practices and initiatives, resulting in a score of 84%, outperforming the global benchmark average by 7% and the GRESB average by 17%. The company was ranked the 6th best performing non-listed company in the retail sector across Asia in 2018.

Majid Al Futtaim closed 2018 with a solid financial and liquidity position covering its net financing needs for the next 3 years through its cash and available committed lines.  In 2018, the company’s group revenue grew by 7% reaching AED 34.6 billion, while EBITDA increased by 9% year-on-year to AED 4.6 billion. The company continued to maintain a strong balance sheet with total assets valued at AED 60.4 billion and a net debt of around AED 12.6 billion. Fitch Ratings and Standard & Poor’s have reaffirmed the company’s credit rating at ‘BBB’ with a stable outlook, for a seventh consecutive year, reiterating its credit strengths such as the resilience of its business model, quality of assets, strong corporate governance and prudent financial management.

The total value of all Sukuk listed on Dubai’s exchanges has now reached 61.49 billion US dollars, the largest amount of any listing centre in the world.

TEAM ABU DHABI AIM FOR WINNING START IN PORTUGAL

in Sports by

Reigning F1 world champion Torrente feeling good on return to scene of debut triumph last season

Reigning champions Team Abu Dhabi are determined to make a winning start to the 2019 UIM F1H2O World Championship which regroups with the Grand Prix of Portugal this weekend.

After storms disrupted the opening round of the series in Dammam, Saudi Arabia, defending individual champion Shaun Torrente and team-mate Thani Al Qemzi are especially eager to launch their double title defence with a win in Portimao.

Torrente has particularly good feelings on his return to Portugal where he grabbed pole position and scored a double race win on his debut with Team Abu Dhabi last year.

“I’m excited to get back to Portugal,” he said. “It was a great Grand Prix for us last year. I felt nervous as it was my first race for Team Abu Dhabi, and I was very happy to come out on top.

“Going back to a venue where you’ve won before makes you feel that you are good for that race course. I really love that venue and I’m looking forward to racing there again.”

Added Torrente: “It was very frustrating to not get started in Saudi after all the hard work done by the team to be ready for the new season. We want to get the first Grand Prix in the books and start off on a good foot, and I just can’t wait to get going again in Portimao.”

Al Qemzi, third in last year’s drivers’ championship, commented: “I have a very good feeling that we will retain our team title this season. But for the time being we’re focused only on this event which will show how strong the competition is this year.

“As for main contenders in the individual championship, I can’t look past my own team-mate. Shaun is definitely the man to beat.”

Among the Team Abu Dhabi duo’s biggest rivals will be France’s three time-world champion Philippe Chiappe who is chasing his fourth win in Portugal in partnership with son-in-law Peter Morin for CTIC F1 Shenzhen China.

Also relishing action in Portugal with Team Abu Dhabi in the battle for the F4-S Trophy are Mohammed Al-Mehairbi who is looking to build on his fourth place overall finish last season and Rashed Al-Remeithi.

Sponsored by Etihad Airways and run under the umbrella of Abu Dhabi International Marine Sports Club, Team Abu Dhabi is supported by the Abu Dhabi Sports Council and runs under the patronage of H.H. Sheikh Dr. Sultan Bin Khalifa Al-Nahyan, advisor to the Head of State and chairman of the board of directors of the ADIMSC.

Action on the 1.937km Arade River Circuit gets under way on Friday afternoon with free practice ahead of a busy schedule of qualifying and race activity on Saturday and Sunday.

  1. Shaun Torrente is aiming for more Grand Prix success in Portugal
  2. Torrente and Thani Al Qemzi are fully focused on the job to be done in Portimao

Takeda to Highlight New Research into the Long-term Complications of Chronic Hypoparathyroidism at the European Congress of Endocrinology 2019 Annual Meeting

in Health by

Seven presentations will be shared, including new data on the risks of long-term cardiovascular, renal and infection complications, underlining Takeda’s commitment to further understanding of this rare disease

Takeda Pharmaceutical Company Limited (TSE:4502/NYSE:TAK) (“Takeda”) today announced that it will feature 7 presentations, including one oral presentation, at the upcoming European Congress of Endocrinology (ECE) Annual Meeting from May 18-21, 2019 in Lyon, France. The data presentations include findings from new research into the long-term risks of cardiovascular, renal and infection complications that patients with chronic hypoparathyroidism may experience as well as the latest findings from on-going real world and clinical studies, including the Global Burden of Illness Survey and the 6-year RACE study.

Takeda will also sponsor two satellite symposia. The first will focus on the burden of illness in chronic hypoparathyroidism patients with impaired biochemical control and comorbidities associated with the disease (Forum 1 on May 19, 13.45–14.45). The second symposium will present new perspectives in managing not adequately controlled hypoparathyroidism patients (Forum 3 on May 20, 13.45–14.35). Takeda will also have an exhibition booth throughout the congress (Booth #B02).

“The new research we are presenting at ECE 2019 continues to further our understanding of chronic hypoparathyroidism, especially about how long-term complications and symptoms may impact patients living with this rare disease,” explained John Germak M.D., Global Medical Team Lead at Takeda. “The clinical and real-world studies reflect our commitment to advancing our knowledge of chronic hypoparathyroidism and to improving patient care,” he added.

Hypoparathyroidism is a rare endocrine disease that occurs when inadequate levels of parathyroid hormone (PTH) are secreted by the parathyroid glands, resulting in a mineral imbalance in the body expressed by a low concentration of calcium (hypocalcemia) and a high concentration of phosphate (hyperphosphatemia) in the blood.1 Studies have shown that a range of approximately 24–37 in 100,000 patients are affected by hypoparathyroidism.2 In patients who are not adequately controlled, this disease can have a significant impact on patient well-being through a range of physical, cognitive and emotional symptoms, and comorbidities.3,4

Takeda’s presence at this year’s ECE meeting includes the following presentations, which are intended for scientific discussion only:

  • Risk of sepsis, respiratory infections, and kidney or other genitourinary (GU) infections in patients with chronic hypoparathyroidism (HypoPT)4 OC1.4, May 19, 2019, Salle Gratte-Ciel 1+2+3, 12.00 – 13.00

Champion horses check-in to experience Emirates Equine

in Business by

Close to 100 horses heading to the Shanghai leg of the Longines Global Champions Tour between 3 and 5 May 2019 were the latest to experience Emirates Equine- Emirates SkyCargo’s specialised product for calm and comfortable transportation of horses.

91 horses boarded two Emirates SkyCargo Boeing 777 freighter aircraft specially chartered for the occasion for their journey from Belgium.

The horses were first led into specially designed horse stalls which were then loaded directly into the cargo aircraft for a smooth boarding experience.

On these flights, the horses were accommodated two per horse stall, considered the equivalent of business class travel. The horse stalls were also fitted with hay nets to ensure that the equine champions didn’t lack their in-flight snacks.

Emirates SkyCargo’s equine customers also had access to constant care during the flight as the carrier’s freighter aircraft also has provision for qualified vets and grooms to travel with the horses during the flight.

The air cargo carrier worked with Peden Bloodstock, a reputed equine transportation company, to ensure that the horses were well cared for before, during and after their flights so they could hit the ground running at Shanghai.

Post the tournament, the horses once again boarded their Emirates SkyCargo flights back to Belgium.

Dream Cruises Selects SES Networks’ Game-Changing Connectivity for Cruise Fleet

in Business by

Guests and crew onboard World Dream, Genting Dream and the recently launched Explorer Dream will experience transformational, ultra-fast, low-latency connectivity powered by SES Networks’ Signature Maritime Solution

Dream Cruises, a brand of Genting Cruise Lines, has selected SES Networks’ Signature Cruise Solution to provide exceptional speeds, low latency, and unmatched fibre-like service to its passenger ship fleet, comprised of World Dream, Genting Dream and Explorer Dream, for the Asian luxury market, SES announced today.

Crew and guests of the newly-launched Explorer Dream will experience exceptional SES-powered guest connectivity onboard the 75,000-gross-ton, 2,000-passenger ship. The SES Networks’ solution will also be introduced onboard Genting Dream in September this year, completing the fleet-wide implementation that follows the successful launch of SES Networks’ managed service onboard World Dream, Dream Cruises’ second cruise ship, which debuted in 2017.

The new Explorer Dream will have homeports in Shanghai and Tianjin, as well as Sydney and Auckland later in the year. Its significantly enhanced connectivity will enable guests to chat with friends on WeChat, pick up a bargain on Taobao, or stream high-resolution video on YouKu without interruption or lag. It will also mean that guests can share photos and videos from their trip in real-time across social media, or battle with their friends in League of Legends as easily as they can on land.

SES Networks’ Signature Cruise Solution combines the low latency of its O3b medium earth orbit (MEO) satellite constellation with a fully managed end-to-end service, backed up by its highly reliable geostationary (GEO) fleet to ensure network resilience. The result is a seamless, high-performance broadband service delivered to everyone onboard the Dream Cruises fleet.

“Today’s cruise passengers demand excellent connectivity even when they are travelling on the high seas. As part of our efforts to provide our guests with the best possible services and amenities on board our ships, we partnered with SES Networks because of their high-speed capability to deliver a terrestrial broadband-like internet experience in some of the most challenging of conditions,” said Thatcher Brown, President at Dream Cruises.

“A Dream Cruise has the ability to deliver inspirational voyages at sea that create memories to last a lifetime. A key part of that adventure nowadays is the digital experience. Our Signature Cruise Solution ensures that passengers onboard Explorer Dream – along with World Dream and Genting Dream – will experience the new standard of enhanced guest connectivity,” said Simon Maher, Vice President Global Sales, Cruise Maritime Services at SES Networks. “Because SES Networks and Dream Cruises have shared values around delivering transformational and inspirational experiences at sea, we are incredibly proud to partner with them to enable this level of service.”
